Orbital Lasers Raises ¥3.02 Billion (Approx. $20 Million) in Series A Funding

Accelerating the development of Satellite Laser to open the future of the new space age

Orbital Lasers Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Tadanori Fukushima; hereinafter “Orbital Lasers”), a company developing innovative space laser and optical technologies, today announced that it has raised ¥3.02 billion (approximately $20 million) in its Series A funding round through a third-party allotment of new shares and issuance of J-KISS convertible equity instruments. With this round, the company’s total equity funding since the seed round now reaches ¥3.92 billion (approximately $26 million).

Since its founding in January 2024 as a carve-out from SKY Perfect JSAT, Orbital Lasers has been developing space-based laser technologies that achieve world-class performance in high power, compact size, and high efficiency. In December 2024, the company raised ¥900 million (approximately $6 million) in its seed round. Building on research outcomes from its collaboration with RIKEN, Orbital Lasers has accelerated R&D toward higher-power and more compact space lasers while expanding its team and advancing preparations for commercialization.

In addition, under a research and development contract with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the company has been conducting concept design and prototype development of mission components for a globally advanced compact satellite LiDAR system.

Through the Series A funding, Orbital Lasers will advance development centered on high-performance laser transmission technology for space applications, alongside:

– High-resolution photon reception technologies, and

– Mission-optimized satellite bus technologies

By integrating these three core technologies, the company aims to strengthen its system-level technological competitiveness.

This will enable Orbital Lasers to realize world-first private-sector businesses, including:

– High-precision topographic measurement using satellite LiDAR, and

– Safe and efficient space debris removal and control using laser technology

Through these technology developments and their commercialization, Orbital Lasers aims to become a global leader in space optical technologies in the 2030s.
